How We Approach a Brand Refresh

A brand refresh is not starting over. It's evolving what works and fixing what doesn't. Here's our process.

A brand refresh is not a rebrand. A rebrand says: we need to become something different. A refresh says: we need to become a better version of what we already are. Most brands that come to us do not need to start from scratch. They need refinement, consistency, and a system that works harder for them.

Start with an honest audit

Every refresh begins with understanding what exists. We look at every touchpoint: the logo, the type system, the color palette, the website, social presence, printed materials, and internal documents. We are looking for inconsistencies, outdated elements, and missed opportunities.

The audit also includes a competitive scan. How does the brand compare visually to its peers? Where does it blend in? Where does it stand apart? This context helps us make targeted recommendations rather than subjective ones.

Identify what stays and what evolves

Not everything needs to change. Some brands have a strong logo that simply needs refinement, not replacement. Others have a solid color palette but a type system that undermines it. The goal of a refresh is surgical precision: change what is not working, preserve what is, and bring everything into alignment.

We present our findings and recommendations before any design work begins. This ensures alignment on the scope and direction, and it gives the client confidence that the investment is going to the right places.

Build the system, not just the pieces

A refresh is only as good as the system it produces. Individual assets can look polished in isolation and still feel disconnected in practice. We deliver a cohesive brand system: logo suite, type hierarchy, color standards, layout principles, and usage guidelines that make consistency effortless going forward.

The best refreshes are the ones where the brand feels familiar but elevated. Existing customers recognize it. New audiences take it more seriously. That is the outcome we design toward.

Thinking about a refresh? We would love to hear about your brand.
